Amnesty International Public Statement, 31 March 2008 Amnesty International condemns the reportedly excessive use of force by Belarusian security forces against demonstrators who had gathered in the capital, Minsk, on 25 March 2008. Up to two thousand people had gathered in a square in the centre of the city to mark the ninetieth anniversary of the short-lived independence of Belarus in 1918, which is now referred to by the political opposition as Freedom Day. The authorities had not sanctioned the demonstration and President Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s government had vowed to prevent any public action to mark the occasion |

OSCE Press Release VIENNA, 28 March 2008 - Miklos Haraszti, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, sharply criticised today a crackdown on independent journalists and media outlets throughout the Republic of Belarus. "I condemn this targeted assault on the independent media as an unconcealed violation of OSCE commitments signed by the Government of Belarus to protect the freedom of the press," said Haraszti. |

Statement by Reporters Without Borders, 28.03.2008 Reporters Without Borders condemns the raids which Belarusian KGB security agents carried out on 27 March on the homes of many journalists and on the Minsk bureaux of two radio stations - Radio Racyja and European Radio for Belarus - and the satellite TV station Belsat. Headquartered in neighbouring Poland, these three broadcasters employ journalists in Belarus who work without official authorisation. |

Press Release of the European Union - Brussels, 28 March 2008 The Presidency, on behalf of the Member States of the European Union, expresses strong disappointment at the arrest of a large number of participants, especially young people, and condemns the use of violence in dispersing peaceful demonstrators on the occasion of the Freedom Day in Minsk and other Belarusian cities on the 25 March. The European Union, recalling that the main demonstration in Minsk had been authorized by the Minsk City Council and proceeded peacefully, calls upon Belarus to release those arrested without delay and to refrain from further prosecuting them. |
