Source: Nasha Viasna (www.spring96.org) A year has passed since the celebration of the official independence day on 3 July 2008, at which more than 50 people were injured after the explosion of a home-made bomb. A criminal case under the article ‘malignant hooliganism’ was brought on this fact. Aleh Piakarski, head of the organized crime department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, stated to Interfax that during the year that passed between 3 July 2008 and 3 July 2009 120 persons were considered as suspects in the explosion case, but none of them proved to be guilty.

Urgent Action: Todesstrafe in Belarus

Die Behörden von Belarus haben zwei Männer zum Tode verurteilt. Das zuständige Gericht in Brest verurteilte den 30-jährigen Vasily Yuzepchuk am 29. Juni zum Tode, das Todesurteil gegen den 25-jährigen Andrei Zhuk wurde vom zuständigen Gericht in Minsk am 22. Juli gesprochen.

Ein Bericht der Amnesty International Jugendgruppe Albstadt

Nun schon zum dritten Mal hieß es für uns, die Jugendgruppe von Amnesty International aus Albstadt: Ab geht’s zum Southside … Auch in diesem Jahr waren wir mit einem Stand auf dem Bazar des größten Festivals im wilden Süden vertreten. Unser Ziel: Möglichst viele Jugendliche auf die Arbeit von Amnesty International aufmerksam zu machen und sie zu bewegen, an unserer Fotoaktion teilzunehmen und sich somit aktiv für die Menschenrechte einzusetzen. Dieses Jahr forderten wir bei unserer Fotoaktion ein Ende der Todesstrafe in Belarus (Weißrussland).

Amnesty International: Emanuel Zeltser released

Emanuel Zeltser was pardoned on 30 June by the Belarusian president, Alyaksandr Lukashenka. He was released a few hours later.
US national Emanuel Zeltser had been arrested on 12 March 2008 as he arrived by plane in Belarus. Nine days later he was charged with "use of forged documents." He was sentenced on 11 August 2008 to three years in prison for "using false official documents" and "economic espionage" following a closed trial. An appeal to the Supreme Court was denied on 31 October 2008, also in a closed hearing.

No further action is requested from the UA network. Many thanks to all who sent appeals.

June was marked by trials of the politically motivated criminal cases against participants of the ‘Process of 14’ and the human rights defender Leanid Svetsik. The under-aged Maxim Dashuk was punished with 15 months of personal restraint without direction to open penitentiary institution. Despite the adoption of the law on amnesty, only one participant of the ‘Process of 14’, Mikhail Pashkevich, was amnestied. Personal restraint was replaced with twice larger terms of corrective labor for two other participants of the ‘Process of 14’, Ales Charnyshou and Ales Straltsou.
