Belarus
(Weißrussland) ist das letzte Land in Europa und in der früheren
Sowjetunion, in dem die Todesstrafe noch angewendet wird. Mit
Abschaffung der Todesstrafe, würden die Behörden in Weißrussland die
letzte Hürde beseitigen, um Europa zur „Todesstrafenfreien Zone“ zu
machen.

"Jede Hinrichtung ist eine zu viel" – Andrea Rigoni vom
Europarat, in einem offenen Brief an die Behörden von Belarus, 14.
April 2008.
 Als letztes europäisches Land, das die Todesstrafe verhängt und durch
Erschießungen exekutiert, hat Belarus laut dem heute veröffentlichten
Bericht von Amnesty International dringenden Nachholbedarf. Offizielle
Statistiken fehlen, die Menschenrechtsorganisation schätzt jedoch dass
seit der Unabhängigkeit im Jahr 1991 ca. 400 Menschen hingerichtet
wurden. "Die Behörden von Belarus müssen sofort alle Hinrichtungen
stoppen und die Todesstrafe für immer abschaffen. Als letztes
europäisches Land, das die Todesstrafe noch anwendet, stünde es Belarus
gut zu Gesicht, sich dem internationalen Trend anzuschließen und diese
schwere Menschenrechtsverletzung ein für alle mal zu beenden" Heinz
Patzelt, Generalsekretär von Amnesty International Österreich (AI) dazu.

Reporters Without Borders today urged Belarus to end its systematic
refusal to give permission to foreign journalists to work in the
country, saying they were the target of “ridiculous bureaucratic and
political behaviour.”
A new media law that came into force on
8 February requires all foreign journalists to get accreditation from
the foreign ministry before coming to Belarus, but requests have been
systematically refused, “forcing journalists to work illegally,” the
worldwide press freedom organisation said. It formally protested to
foreign minister Sergei Martynov.

The Belarusian authorities refuse to register
the human rights organisation Nasja Viasna. This shows clearly that the
Belarusian regime has failed an important test of their will to
democratize the country, says Robert Hårdh, Secretary General of the
Swedish Helsinki Committee.
– We believe that this is a matter of discrimination for political
reasons. We are being systematically prevented from exercising our
freedom of organisation, says Valiantsin Stefanovitj, vice president of
the human rights organisation Viasna, which has tried to register the
new organisation Nasja Viasna.

Reporters Without Borders condemns yesterday’s decision by judge
Tatsiana Miranyuk of a district court in the western city of Brest to
order the immediate seizure and destruction of the seventh and eighth
issues of the opposition cultural magazine Arche on the grounds that their content was “extremist”.
“We are again confronted by an absurd logic,” Reporters Without Borders said. “The administrative and judicial harassment of Arche
since its creation in 1997 is a sad reminder of what went on under
Soviet domination. It does not bode well for the progress in press
freedom we had been hoping for. We express our support for the
magazine’s founder, Andrei Dynko, and its editor, Valer Bulhakau, and we urge the judicial authorities to reconsider this decision.”

Das "Freie Theater Weißrussland" beweist zweierlei: Im Reich
Alexander Lukaschenkos, des letzten Diktators Europas, rührt sich
künstlerischer Widerstand. Doch ist er nur im Untergrund möglich.
Die Weihnachts- und Neujahrswünsche an das weißrussische Volk kamen
per Videobotschaft. Der ehemalige Dissident und erste Präsident des
nachkommunistischen Tschechien, Vaclav Havel, verbreitete Optimismus:
"Ich bin fest davon überzeugt", sagte er, "dass, auch wenn Weißrussland
derzeit nur mit einem Bein in einem freien Europa steht, das Land
früher oder später dort auf zwei Beinen ankommen wird."
